Dear Diary: Road Trip Series #2 – My car self-care package

A Car Care Package - why?

One of the many things that I have learnt since being diagnosed with creaky knees, is the importance of managing my condition, so that I can maximize my ability to live life to the fullest. The last thing I want is to be away on holiday and have a flare up. I follow these tips

“Avoiding flare ups - is the mantra of my life." Add to that also "Don't try to eat the elephant whole, eat it in bite size pieces"

Creaky Charlie

Planning and preparing for managing my condition, means that I now have a self care package that I keep in my car at all times. Its all about avoiding the dreaded flare and ensuring I maximize my comfort and minimize my pain. Any car journey in excess of 30 minutes has the potential to give me discomfort. This car care package is my go to resource for minimizing this impact. When we are talking about a road trip holiday – this package is going to be vital.

What do I pack in my Car Care Package ?

Driving shoes

Having the correct footwear is vital. Comfort and support beats high fashion heels and yet I am not ready for ‘granny’ shoes. I live in my TAOS sandals in summer and my FRANKiE4‘s in winter. Both have

Medications

Keeping in mind the safety issues around driving and medications I pack some over the counter medication such as Panadol Osteo and, or Ibuprofen.

When anticipating a long journey, I will also start taking anti-inflammatories in preparation. This was a great suggestion from my physio and enables me to be proactive in managing my pain.

I also have a tiny tube that I can fit 4-6 tablets into and I slip that into my handbag so that it is with me at all times.

Creams and Knee

I don’t go anywhere without my favourite go to cream and knee support. This is by far my favourite form of self care. I find Rapigel particularly effective when rubbed on to my knees and then adding the knee support tube. The combination of the heat from the Rapigel and the compression of the bandage is perfect bliss. Voltaren and Deep Heat are my next go to creams.

!!! PLEASE NOTE: Rapigel is labelled as being for animal use only !!! I was told about the gel from a friend whose Physio in WA had suggested this treatment.

Cold/Hot Pack

I personally prefer heat on my knees to reduce pain symptoms, but turn to ice when I need to reduce swelling. These reusable – multi purpose packs are perfect for me as I can freeze or heat in a microwave as it suits me.  If frozen, don’t forget to have a tea towel/cloth wrapped around it before applying it to your skin.

Music - Spotify

My arthritis-friendly car has a radio, but nothing is better than my own favourite Spotify play lists. I connect my phone to my car media console and turn on Spotify. I find music is a great coping strategy. I can distract myself from my pain and discomfort by singing along to my favourite tunes.

For some reason my Irish music playlist is epic!

TENS machine

I realize that not everyone finds these machines efective, but I do. I have a portable one that I can simply slip into my handbag or in this case into my car self-care package,

Thumb splint

My right hand often gets creaky and sore from holding the car steering wheel. So for times of need I have a thumb splint that I can use to give my thumb some support. I’m considering buying a steering wheel cover to make the steering wheel thicker to reduce the stress on my joints.

Tea bag and fragrant oil

There’s nothing quite like a refreshing cup of earl grey tea to re-energize myself. It also means that I take a very important break and get out of the car and walk about. There’s always a couple of teabags in my car for emergency supplies.

I love the energizing scent of ginger and the soothing lavender smell too. Pop a splash behind your ears and pain sensations recede into the background.
